Our climbing routes offer a diverse range of challenges, from single-pitch sport climbing to up to four pitches of traditional climbing, catering to climbers with various skills and preferences.

The climbing at Karoo 1 is predominantly on compact sandstone, known for its stability and unique texture. While climbers may encounter loose rock in certain areas, particularly on the far left-hand side of the main amphitheater, most of the routes are exceptionally well-formed with no loose rock, ensuring a safe and enjoyable climb. The grades of our routes vary significantly, ranging from 10/4 to 28/7b+, offering something for everyone from beginners to seasoned climbers.

Climbing Through the Seasons

Climbing in the Karoo is a year-round activity, each season bringing its own charm and challenges. In the summer months of December, January, and February, climbers can expect very hot conditions, making early morning or late afternoon climbs more comfortable. Conversely, the winter months of July and August bring a frosty cold, typical of the Karoo, with the majestic Matroosberg mountain, standing at 2251 meters, often capped with snow. These seasonal variations add to the allure of climbing here, as the landscape transforms throughout the year.
